Ready To Take The Plunge?

If you've been to a try dive and want to learn how to dive, we can help you! 

Your first qualification is Ocean Diver. In 6 theory lessons, 5 pool lessons, and 4 open water lessons, you'll learn:

• How to assemble and disassemble your scuba kit

• How to safely enter, exit, and manoeuvre underwater

• Basic life saving skills

• How being underwater affects the human body

• How to safely dive to 20 metres underwater

What Gear Will I Need?

The club will provide all equipment where possible, or recommend dive shops where you can rent high quality, reliable equipment. The pool can be quite cool so a t-shirt or a wetsuit may be desired.

How Much Will It Cost?

Whilst the training is delivered by volunteers, there are some costs associated with learning to dive

• BSAC HQ Annual Member Fee - £74 (Paid to BSAC HQ)

• Leeds SCUBA Club (BSAC 115) Annual Membership - £130.00 (Paid to Leeds club via direct debit)

• Purchase of an Ocean Diver Training Pack - £48.00 digital or £53 printed (Paid to BSAC HQ) 

• The Ocean Diver course with Leeds SCUBA Club costs £220 (Paid to Leeds club):

This includes: 

• One off joining fee 

• 8 pool sessions

• 6 theory lectures

• The use of Branch equipment in the pool and in open water.  

• Two days’ (open water) instruction and training at Capernwray (4 dives) 

Additional Costs:

Once your pool training is complete, the next step is training in open water. This training is usually completed over two days and usually takes place at Capernwray Dive Centre in Lancashire. You will complete this part of your training in a drysuit. The course fee does not include the cost of hiring a dry suit. The Branch does have a small number of donated dry suits that can be hired for a reasonable cost. However, we have limited options and sizes. If we do not have a dry suit of a correct size, you may need to hire one for your open water training from a local dive shop (further information will be provided nearer the time). Hire charges for drysuits are approximately £25-50 a day, but these vary. 

When you progress into open water, you will need to pay for your own entrance into the dive site for two days. We recommended purchasing a ‘two-year membership and diving entry’ as we do train/dive at Capernwray quite regularly. A two-year membership currently costs £40. Entry into the site is currently £20 (with membership) a day.

Over the course of the weekend of diving, you will need to refill your diving cylinder with breathing air between dives – for four dives this is likely to cost around £30-40 – depending on the size of your cylinder and whether you use Nitrox.
