New to scuba diving? Take the plunge with us!
If you’ve never scuba dived before, we highly recommend you do a Try Dive first to see if diving is for you.
Find out more
If you’ve given it a go, and want to learn how to dive, we can help you! (Please note that we will not be running another Ocean Diver course until late in 2025)
Your first qualification is Ocean Diver. In 6 theory lessons, 5 pool lessons, and 4 open water lessons, you’ll learn:
- How to assemble and disassemble your scuba kit
- How to safely enter, exit, and manoeuvre underwater
- Basic life saving skills
- How being underwater affects the human body
- How to safely dive to 20 metres underwater
How Much Will It Cost
Whilst the training is delivered by volunteers, there are some costs associated with learning to dive
- BSAC HQ Annual Member Fee – £65.50
- Leeds SCUBA Club joining fee – £22.00
- Leeds SCUBA Club (BSAC 115) Annual Membership – £130.00
- Purchase of an Ocean Diver Training Pack – £45.00 (digital) or £50 + p&p (printed)
- £7 per session for pool fees, equipment and instruction
For these costs, you get
- Diver Training Manual and Training Materials
- Worldwide Scuba Diving Insurance provided through BSAC
- Subscription to SCUBA magazine, providing advice, tips, trips, and reviews
- Subsidised pool access on club nights (normally £10)
- Free equipment rental for duration of Diver Training
- Subsidised equipment rental after qualification
- Discount at local Dive Shops
What Gear Will I Need
For try dives, just a swimming costume and t-shirt you don’t mind getting wet.
For Ocean Diver, the club will provide all equipment where possible, or recommend dive shops where you can rent high quality, reliable equipment. The pool can be quite cool so a t shirt or a wetsuit is desirable.

Leeds SCUBA Club2 weeks agoOn Wednesday we had a wonderful group of people at our try dive event. They all had a great time and we’re looking forward to welcoming some of them back in January for our Ocean Diver course.
We’d like to say a massive thank you to all our members that helped out and thank you to the instructors that came from other clubs to help us out.
Leeds SCUBA Club4 months agoA wonderful meal a lupes catina with a few branch members. Guess we'll be sleeping well after a really fulfilling (but spicy) meal. Thanks to Vicki for organising
Leeds SCUBA Club4 months agoOn 1st August, 6 of our divers went to Anglesey to put their Marine Life Appreciation skills to the test. They identified many species of fish and mollusc in Rhoscolyn Bay and took some fantastic photos. It was a fantastic weekend for camping and diving, not a cloud in the sky and a nice calm sea on the Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately the trip was cut short due to weather on Sunday but it didn't dampen any spirits after such a lovely day on Saturday.
Thank you and well done to Stewart Who organised his first ever dive trip! Thank you to the local dive club Deifwyr Mon Divers for all their invaluable advice and for filling cylinders for us.
Leeds SCUBA Club4 months agoThis weekend 13 of our divers teamed up with 5 Sheffield scuba divers on a trip to the Farne Islands. We were hoping to see some lovely marine life and hopefully some playful seals. The seals did not disappoint! Every diver saw a seal or two, some of the seals got up close and personal with a couple of members… the members involved have now recovered from non consensual seal kisses and nuzzling 🫣. Divers reported seeing Monkfish, Nudibranchs, shoals of fish and much, much more.
Thank you to Tessa, Ash, Billy, Erin and Mikael from Sheffield Scuba, it was lovely meeting you all and we can’t wait for more cross club collaboration.
Thank you to all of our members that attended, we have heard nothing but praise about your actions and how well you all conduct yourself. We are very very proud to have such amazing members (and fabulous instructors that trained you!). Thank you to Victoria for organising the trip and Alex for being her rock throughout the trip. Thank you to Richard Greenwood and Tessa Fisher for offering support and advice to Victoria during the planning stage and on the trip, you were superstars!
Why not join us next year for the next Farnes adventure.
